San Luis Obispo City will soon be adopting a new law to prohibit Styrofoam food containers and beverage cups. This law will ban restaurants from handing out Styrofoam containers when patrons ask for food to go. It is a step that will help to eliminate material that ends up in landfills.
All restaurants should be adopting this policy to reduce waste and hazardous materials. Styrofoam is no longer necessary, there are many companies that sell to go containers that are made out of cardboard or paper and some cups and containers are compostable.
Restaurants use Styrofoam to save money because it is cheap for them to purchase. They need to change their mindset and think of what Styrofoam does to the environment. Caring for the environment would "green" their reputation and conscientious citizens will choose to eat at restaurants that want to make a difference by doing the right thing.
San Luis Obispo is not the first city to implement a ban on Styrofoam New York City has banned the foam which will go into effect next year. Other cities such as Portland, Oregon, San Francisco and Seattle have also banned Styrofoam from being used in their cities.
As more cities follow suit from not allowing Styrofoam containers for food, beverages or for coolers, the better off the environment will be with less waste going into the landfills. Styrofoam is not eco-friendly and does not decompose.
I was in a restaurant a couple of weeks ago and asked for a to go container however I mentioned that I do not want Styrofoam. I was brought aluminum foil to wrap my food in. That was a little better and bringing my own container would be the best idea. What has your city done to help reduce wasteful materials?
