Conferences, seminars and events can be and should be Zero Waste. With careful planning you can make these meetings a much more productive and healthier environment by using only items that are recyclable or compostable.
Planning is the key for a successful event. Make sure your vendors and participants know that only recyclable and compostable items will be allowed in. If you have food vendors make sure they compost the left overs and they use utensils and plates that are recyclable or biodegradable.
1) Have everyone bring their own water bottle.
2) Water should only be available in jugs, not plastic bottles.
3) People attending should also bring their own shopping bags if there are wares to purchase.
4) Restrooms should have hand blow dryers instead of paper towels.
5) Must have - Resource Recovery Stations to collect recyclables, reusables, organics/compostables and landfill.
6) Have more than enough Resource Recovery Stations.
7) Educate your audience!
The above list is just a few of the basics. Each step will bring your event closer to Zero Waste. While you do something good for the planet you are doing something good for you and others. You can be the example of one link in the chain to a cleaner, healthier planet.
